Lori Woodward Simons
Traditonal Paintings For Today's World

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from the University of Arizona, but my real art education began in 1991 when I sought out a local teacher of watercolor in Albuquerque NM. My husband and I moved to New Hampshire in '94, and I taught watercolor classes for a few years in Manchester. However, my art skill definitely took a turn for the better after studying with Sondra Freckelton in upstate NY. In fact, I studied with her and her husband Jack Beal for the next 5 summers.

While at one of Sondra's workshops I met the editor of Watercolor Magazine, and to make a very long, and possibly boring story short, I ended up writing 2 columns for that magazine for the next 5 years. These articles featured the works of other artists... except one article where I was able to feature my own still lifes. Perhaps my most popular article to date was, "Beating the Procrastination Blues". Today, I write a column for Watercolor that features my own work -- all these articles are instructional, covering a bevy of subjects from landscape to still life to portraiture. Many of the watercolors featured on this site have been featured in past issues of American Artist'sWatercolor Magazine.

Last but not least, I paint with a well known small group of artists called The Putney Painters. We are mentored by Richard Schmid and his wife Nancy Guzik. There are about a dozen of us who meet in the fall and spring. This group's participants are supportive of each other and are fantastic artists.

OK, I said I was going to keep this brief, but I am hardly ever brief... that's the writer in me. If you have any questions about my work or career, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Lori
